Google’s Nexus One Unboxed

We’re rather excited today – after ordering the new Google Nexus One during the live announcement, DHL have (amazingly) managed to get through the snow and ice to deliver our new phone. Here it is, in pictures:

When you first turn the phone on, you’re treated to quite a pretty animation – which shows off the screen display very well. You’re welcomed by very clear instructions on how to set the phone up, use the features and register the phone with your Google account:

Here’s the box:

Here’s what you see when you take the lid off the box – note the Google colours around the edge:

Here’s (not a great) picture of the phone with the separate battery and a few other items – you get headphones, a US charger, a UK charger and a protective cover with a Google Android logo.

Here’sthe back of the phone with the HTC logo:

Quite looking forward to deciding if this is better for me than an iPhone, for which I’ll be sure to update you on Twitter :-)

YES! Do let me know how you get on with it. If you have any issues with android I’ve been using it for a year (as you know) so feel free to pick my brains.

It seems existing t-mobile users can upgrade to a nexus which is great, though I’m still very happy to keep my G1 for the remaining six months of the contract.

This is certainly one device I’ll be considering.

Just noticed at checkout page that they ship to UK! “Also we can ship the unlocked phone to the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Hong Kong.”

Let us know how you get on with it :)

Cool that was quick especially with the weather!

i am thinking of changing to an Android based phone at my next upgrade so it will be good to see how you get on. Particularly with the user experience.

Oh and does the turn by turn Navigation work in the UK??

  4. John Cotterell

Unfortunately, turn by turn nav, as just deployed in the latest google maps update, is only available in the states at the moment, but I hear it kicks ass, and can work in streetview mode too. :)

I think google are currently having some licensing issues with the data outside the US.

I shook the boat in our office of iPhone users and got an G2 touch (also an HTC made mobile with the Android platform) on T-mobile (UK).

I thoroughly enjoy the simplicity and Google-app integration and it’s great to see this being carried over to the NexusOne.

I hope you enjoy the Android platform as much as I have.

“I shook the boat in our office of iPhone users and got an G2 touch”

Totally uinderstand the shake the boat thing. I’ve been an iPhone user for a while (as is my girlfriend). I’ve really gotten used to Android though – it’s fast! The apps in Market are very good too. Coming to the end of my first 24hours with the phone too, I notice it still doesn’t need charging. That’s better than the iPhone!

its not available from the shops you need to go to google and order it online. At present it is shipping unlocked from the US, dont know the exact price off the top of my head. It should work on any UK network.

i read today Vodafone will the first to officially support it over here.

Yeah – I’m keen to have flash on the Nexus. Very keen – Google analytics goes very wrong in the current version of Andriod browser. Thinking about it, i’m not that keen on the Andriod browser. Are there any good alternatives?

  10. John Cotterell

I know opera have released an alternative but I’ve not tried it. I agree the existing browser is terrible.

But you know what? browsing is one of the few things I don’t use the device for, as so many of my most frequented sites have their own dedicated apps now.

Plus being a flash developer I have very little interest in a flash free web. So that might change on next upgrade. :)

I’m very tempted to get one of these Nexus One phones, I even got as far as the checkout, but then I then was wondering about whether UK people would also automatically get charged customs/VAT since they are shipping with DHL, can you please confirm if you had to pay this extra and if so, how much extra?

Thanks, hope you’re enjoying your new toy! :)

  12. Simon Barker

Thanks Richard, good to know there’s a chance of avoiding additional costs on buying it. I may well have to treat myself to my first Android handset.

    Cheers!

  13. Nick

Looks great, I really want to get one.

Can I ask what UK network you have it running on? My contract is up on my iPhone so it would be very good if I could just move the chip across and recycle my iPhone for £200.

  14. richardbaxterseo

Hi Nick – yes you may!

I’m running on O2. It took a bit of Googling to work out the best way to connect to their data service – but not too long. So far the service has been excellent. I’ve noticed the 3g drops perhaps once or twice a day, but it sorts itself out really quickly.

    Regards,

  15. Nick

Great thanks for this. Someone has just got one in the office and I’ll take a look at his before buying mine.

BTW – This is a good site, I’ve added it to my RSS feed.
